AvaTrade is a long-running CFD and forex broker that has built its reputation on a broad licence portfolio and a varied platform line-up, including its own FX options platform. The group’s European company is authorised by the Central Bank of Ireland, and it also holds licences in Australia, Japan, Cyprus, Abu Dhabi, South Africa, Israel and Kenya. As with most multi-entity brokers, though, clients outside those regions are normally onboarded by Ava Trade Markets Ltd in the British Virgin Islands, an offshore jurisdiction. Our verdict: a credible, well-licensed group with strong tools for beginners and options traders, held back by relatively steep inactivity charges and limited cost transparency on its public pages.

Regulation and safety

AvaTrade lists the following companies and licences in its website footer and legal documents page:

The Central Bank of Ireland is the EU regulator for AvaTrade’s European clients, which brings ESMA rules on leverage, negative balance protection and marketing. ASIC and the Japanese FSA are also strict supervisors. The BVI entity, by contrast, operates under a lighter offshore regime where leverage can be higher and investor compensation is limited or absent. Please note that we could only confirm these licences against AvaTrade’s own pages: the BVI FSC, Central Bank of Ireland and ASIC register pages could not be opened during our check, so verify the licence number for your entity directly on the regulator’s site before you deposit.

Fees and spreads

AvaTrade prices most CFD trading through the spread rather than a separate commission, and its help centre says spreads vary by instrument and are listed on each instrument’s conditions page. We were not able to verify a current headline spread for EUR/USD, so we have not quoted one here. Open a demo or check the platform for live pricing.

Cost itemWhat AvaTrade states
SpreadsVary by instrument; see trading conditions in the platform
Inactivity feeUSD/EUR/GBP 50 after 3 consecutive months of non-use, then per further period
Administration feeUSD/EUR/GBP 100 after 12 consecutive months of non-use
Deposit feesNone stated by AvaTrade; bank or provider charges may apply
Overnight financingApplies to positions held overnight

The inactivity charges are the clearest cost to plan for. An account left untouched for a year can lose 50 every quarter plus a further 100, which adds up quickly on a small balance. Both fees are waived where local law prohibits them.

Accounts and products

AvaTrade keeps the retail offer simple: one standard trading account, plus a professional status for eligible traders on MT5 that unlocks leverage of up to 1:400 on forex and 1:25 on some cryptocurrencies. Retail leverage depends on which AvaTrade company holds your account and is capped by EU and Australian rules for clients there. The product list covers forex, CFDs on stocks, indices, commodities and cryptocurrencies, ETFs and bonds. AvaTrade also offers vanilla FX options through AvaOptions, which is unusual among retail CFD brokers and lets you define your maximum risk on a trade. We could not confirm an Islamic (swap-free) account on the pages available to us.

Platforms and tools

There is a platform for most styles of trading:

  • AvaTrade WebTrader and AvaTrade App – the in-house platforms for browser and mobile.
  • MetaTrader 4 and MetaTrader 5 – for Expert Advisors and custom indicators.
  • AvaOptions – a dedicated FX options platform with strategy building.
  • AvaSocial and DupliTrade – copy-trading services for following other traders.

A free demo account is available, which is the best way to see real-time spreads before funding.

Deposits and withdrawals

The minimum deposit is 100 in your account’s base currency for card and wire deposits, although AvaTrade itself suggests 1,000 to 2,000 to access the full range of products. Accepted methods include debit and credit cards (credit cards are not available in Canada), bank wire, and e-wallets such as Skrill, Neteller and WebMoney for non-EU and non-Australian clients. Card deposits are usually instant, e-payments arrive within 24 hours and wires can take up to seven business days. Withdrawals must first go back to the card you used, up to the amount deposited; profits above that can go by wire or e-wallet. AvaTrade says processing takes one to two working days, while bank wires can take up to ten business days to arrive.

Who AvaTrade suits, and who should avoid it

Good fit: EU, Australian and Japanese residents who can open with a top-tier AvaTrade entity, beginners who want a simple single account with copy trading, and traders who want FX options alongside CFDs.

Think twice: if you trade infrequently, because the inactivity and administration fees are high compared with many rivals. International clients should check whether their account is with the BVI entity and accept that offshore protection is weaker. CFDs and options are leveraged, complex products and most retail traders lose money with them.

Final verdict

AvaTrade’s strengths are its spread of genuine licences, its platform variety and its options offering. Its weaknesses are the cost of leaving an account idle and the lack of clear headline spreads on its public pages. If you are outside its regulated regions, read the client agreement to see which AvaTrade company you are dealing with, test the platform on a demo, and compare live spreads before committing funds.
